Martin Guy
Martin Guy started work as a greenkeeper in 1988 and has quickly progressed his career. He studied a business management course and within a few years rose to the position of head greenkeeper. He then joined American Golf (UK) Ltd which was part of American Golf Corporation, the world's largest golf course operator with over 300 venues worldwide. He was in charge of maintaining six of their courses within their UK portfolio. These included       high-volume pay and play venues and upmarket courses.
Over the years he has gained considerable skills in golf course renovation work. Four years ago he formed Martin Guy Developments with a view to building on his golf course renovation expertise and greenkeeping skills. He has earned an enviable reputation in the UK golf industry for being able to renovate and maintain golf courses to a standard well in excess of usual expectations whilst still keeping a keen control on costs.
Today the company has an impressive portfolio of clients ranging from entry level/affordable venues to upmarket/trophy standard. Regarding the latter, the company is a preferred golf services supplier to both Woburn Golf & Country Club and Hanbury Manor in Hertfordshire. Woburn is one of the finest inland trophy golf courses in Europe and has hosted the British Masters over the last 20 years. Hanbury Manor is Marriott's luxury five-star golf hotel. For both venues Martin Guy Developments provides a range of contract services including renovation projects, aeration, scarification, bunker shaping and works to greens and tees. The company has specialist equipment to carry out certain tasks which golf venues tend to not have themselves.
In addition to the above, in June 2006, the company was offered the opportunity to take a lease over a small nine hole golf club known as Briggens Park Golf Club. At the outset the golf course was performing poorly but now that its presentation has been dramatically improved the business is performing well.
The company was also approached by Hertsmere Leisure, a charitable leisure trust, to take over the maintenance of Rickmansworth Public Municipal Golf Course in 2008 on a four-year contract. The freehold is owned by Three Rivers District Council. Progress has been good, course presentation has improved considerably, golf revenue has increased and Hertsmere Leisure and the company are now to convert the four-year contract into a 10 year deal.
Given the quality of its work, the company was invited by the 100 year old private members club, Braintree Golf Club, to take over full responsibility for maintaining and renovating the club's 18 hole golf course. The company has entered into an initial five-year contract with the club to do this. The company supplies all greenkeepers and is responsible for implementing a renovation plan which includes bunker rebuilding and tee improvements.
